Release of Impoved Crop and Forage Varieties

During the first round meeting of the National Varety Release Committee (NVRC), held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resouurces assembly hall from March 22-24, 2017, 13 improved crop and forage varieties were released by IQQO. Of these, 11 are crop varieties from cereals, pulses and horticultural crops and the remaining two are forage varieties. The varieties were released by Bako and Sinana Agricultural Research Centers (Table below).

Welcome to the official website of Oromia Agricultural Research Institute (IQQO,-Institiutii Qorannoo Qonna Oromiyaa). IQQO was established by regional proclamation No. 44/2001 in 2001 to support the agricultural development in Oromia Regional State through adapting, generating, multiplying, and disseminating appropriate agricultural technologies. So far, a number of research recommendations including improved crop, livestock, natural resource management, agricultural mechanization, food science, coffee and tea technologies and information were generated and disseminated to the farming/pastoral communities. Currently, IQQO has 17 research centers established across the region based on socio-economic and agro-ecologies of farming community mandated to multi research disciplines.

Here in IQQO, we have young, committed and multi disciple researchers, I can assure you that we all are enthusiastic to make Oromia food and nutrition secured region through continuing fighting against poverty deploying agricultural technology as a major tools. We want to work professionally with all national and international scientific community and believe on synergy. Currently, a lot is expected from us to meet the ever increasing demand of agricultural technologies because of the climate change and population pressure.

Dear Distinguished Visitors,

We are confronted with major challenges like uncontrolled exploitation of natural resource, continuous growth of population, low input use of agricultural technologies which in turn resulted in un-employment and food insufficiency. Our research strategies should focus on the sustainable use of the natural resources and consistent with the principles of sustainable development. Further, our research outputs need to qualify to influence the national agricultural development policies and trigger agricultural transformation.

Background

The Government of Ethiopia is currently implementing its ambitious Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP), which sets a long-term goal of becoming a middle-income country by 2025. It has prioritized key sectors such as industry and agriculture as drivers of sustained economic growth and job creation. The World Bank and other Development Partners (DPs) have programs that are broadly aligned with GTP priorities and aims to help the Government address structural transformation and assist in the implementation of the GTP through the mega project named “Agricultural Growth Program (AGP-II)

The Agricultural Transformation in Oromia

The needs for agricultural transformation in Oromia are justified by the importance of agriculture in the regional economy in terms of contribution to GDP, job creation, export market, and raw material for industries. The region also has a large population, who live below the poverty line. Further, the contribution of Oromia’s agriculture to Ethiopia accounts for 37% of livestock production and nearly 50 and 70% of grain (cereals, pulses and oil crops) and coffee production, respectively. Thus, the transformation of agriculture in Oromia would profoundly propel the overall agricultural transformation of the country.
The purpose of ATO is, therefore, to identify key investment areas that can maximize the return from agricultural investment on a sustainable basis.

The ATO focuses on new initiatives and priorities, implementation strategies, partners, platforms, and financing modalities to achieve the aspired agricultural transformation in the region.
